As extreme heat events become more frequent and intense, EDF has launched the Plan Grand Chaud, a major initiative aimed at reinforcing the safety of its nuclear power plants. This program is designed to adapt facilities to new climate realities, ensuring they can operate safely even during severe heatwaves.
In this context, AX System, in partnership with SPIE, was selected to contribute to the upgrade of Unit 2 at the Bugey nuclear power plant in eastern France. The mission: deploy an advanced adiabatic misting system to ensure optimal cooling of critical equipment.
Misting Technology Serving Nuclear Safety
The solution implemented draws on the expertise of DUTRIE, a company specialized in industrial misting and acquired by AX Group in July 2025. This high-performance misting system was designed to:
- Effectively reduce ambient temperatures around emergency diesel generators.
- Maintain the performance of sensitive equipment during extreme heat conditions.
- Meet post-Fukushima safety requirements by enhancing the plant’s resilience to climate-related risks.
A Technical Partnership with SPIE
The project was carried out in close collaboration with SPIE’s teams, who managed on-site integration. This partnership ensured strict compliance with technical and scheduling constraints, while aligning with the broader scope of Phase B of EDF’s safety enhancement program.
